Frequently Asked Questions

Why does REPSPilot need background location access?

REPSPilot automatically detects when you drive to your rental properties — like Strava tracks runs. Without background location, the app can't detect trips when you're driving without the app open. The IRS requires contemporaneous records, meaning you need to log trips as they happen. Background location is the only way to do this reliably. Other apps require you to manually log every visit. REPSPilot does it for you.

GPS isn't detecting my trips. What should I do?

Check your location permissions: Settings → Privacy → Location Services → REPSPilot → set to "Always" (not "While Using"). Also ensure Motion & Fitness is enabled. On Android, disable battery optimization for the app in Settings → Battery → REPSPilot.

Are my personal trip routes stored?

No. If you classify a trip as personal, the route data is immediately and permanently deleted. Only work-classified trips retain their route data, used solely for IRS mileage documentation.

How do I share my records with my CPA?

Go to Reports → Generate CPA Export Pack → Share with CPA. This creates a secure, read-only PDF link that expires in 30 days. Your CPA doesn't need an account — they just click the link.

What is the 750-hour test?

Under IRC §469(c)(7), to qualify for Real Estate Professional Status you must spend more than 750 hours per year in real property trades or businesses. REPSPilot tracks this in real time on your home screen. This is not tax advice — consult your CPA for your specific situation.

What makes REPSPilot different from REPSLog or REPS Audit Ready?

REPSPilot is the only REPS tracker with passive GPS trip detection. Other apps require you to manually log every visit or start a timer before you go. REPSPilot detects your property visits automatically in the background and asks you to confirm — the same way Strava tracks your runs without you pressing start. REPSPilot also includes tamper-evident monthly locking with SHA-256 hashing, which no competitor offers.

Can I use REPSPilot on multiple devices?

Yes. Your account syncs in real time across all devices. Log on your phone, review on your desktop dashboard, generate exports anywhere.

How do I delete my account and all my data?

Go to Settings → Data & Privacy → Delete Account. Type "DELETE" to confirm. All data is permanently deleted within 30 days. This action cannot be undone.

How long should I keep my REPS records?

The IRS can audit returns up to 3 years back, or 6 years if there's a substantial understatement of income. We recommend retaining REPS records for at least 7 years. REPSPilot defaults to this retention period, but you can delete records at any time.

Is REPSPilot a tax filing tool?

No. REPSPilot is a documentation and record-keeping tool only. It does not file taxes, provide tax advice, or guarantee IRS qualification. Always work with a qualified CPA or tax attorney for your specific situation.
